How to get badge access to a room/building?

  • Depends on the room/building

  • In all cases, make sure you have the badge # or a clear picture of the badge that needs access

    • The long string of characters on the blue strip of the badge is the important part

  • For 30 Bee – need to do MRI safety class first

    • If you’ve already done MRI safety but lost access for some reason (badge error, etc), email cbi@musc.edu and explain the situation and request access again. Jimmy/Scott/Tom should be able to tell you what to do from there

  • For 135 Cannon (any room) - email Dean Braddy from public safety and request access

    • This building is controlled by MUHA so you have to go through their security to get access

    • Dean Braddy is the current security coordinator, but if he is not in that role at some later time, you need to email the current MUHA security coordinator

  • For other buildings (IOP, BEB, etc), you will need to determine who controls the building

How do I get access to the BRIDGE lab email (bridgelab@musc.edu)?

How do I get access to a file or folder on the vdrive?

  • Before any access is granted for data that has PHI, you need to have IRB approval

  • If you are cleared to view the files and folders in question, ask the lab Sys Admin to grant you access to the files or folders

  • The actual permission granting access has to be done by an admin via logging into the vdrive through a remote access software (such as Microsoft Remote Desktop) with an admin account and adjusting user or group permissions, depending on need

How do I find info that no one in the lab knows how to find or accomplish a task no one knows how to do?

  • If it is MUSC-related info/task:

    • Try to determine the department that is relevant – the neuroscience front office, public safety, HR, accounting, etc

      • Google “MUSC [department]”

        • Go to that department’s website and find their “Contact us” page

          • Email or call the main email/phone number or find the title of the individual that seems most related to your query and email that person

            • Explain the situation from a broad perspective, ask if they can help, and ask if they can point you to someone who can help if they cannot

  • If it is non-MUSC related:

    • Google it

    • Use the Troubleshooting guide in the same folder this doc is in for guidance

How do I get ethernet ports turned on?

You need to complete a circuit request via the IT service portal.

My computer is doing X, how do I fix it?

  • Close and reopen the malfunctioning software

  • If the problem is with the computer in general and/or step 1 does not work, restart the computer

  • Worst case scenario: call or email MUSC IT or use the IT service portal.

  • Also keep in mind: it could be a problem that neither you nor anyone in the lab can solve. It could be something that requires intervention by the manufacturer. Also, sometimes problems resolve themselves – it never hurts to just walk away for a few hours or check back on the issue the next morning if you can.
